The biggest organization that we have on campus is our volunteer center, or Heller Service Corps. Having a service organization be the biggest organization on campus makes me so proud to be a Paladin. There are so many ways to get involved, from going to the humane society to helping elementary aged students with their homework. Ms. Nancy will find a place for you within Heller.
It’s not a club that you have to sign up or apply to be in, you’re automatically a member if you’re a Furman student! There’s no pressure to get involved, but very rewarding if you do. If you know that you are already passionate about volunteer work, your freshman year you can apply to be a Freshman Representative. This means that you’ll actively seek out members of your class to help volunteer with Heller and get them just as excited to volunteer as you!
My favorite memory surrounding Heller was this past October, when they put on a Trick-or-Treat party for young children who couldn’t go out in their neighborhoods due to safety issues. The kids got off their buses in full costumes ready to trick-or-treat. It was one of the most memorable moments I’ve had at Furman. Thus, volunteering isn’t boring or a chore. Heller makes it the most amazing experience to be able to take part in, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to do both on and off campus!
