Whats up peeps,
I was brainstorming on how best to show the character of Furman, and a dear friend of mine recommended that I personify Furman as different objects. Don’t worry if you don’t really understand what I mean, because that makes two of us. Let’s get started!

Have you guys heard of highlighters?? Furman would be a highlighter for SURE. Highlighters are used to bring out the best in what we’re doing. They also make things stand out. What does Furman do? Showcase the best qualities of its students and make them stand out (think grad school applications, job applications, etc). Also we use a lot of highlighters in college.

Picture this: The year is 1990. Nelson Mandela has just been released from prison, East and West Germany are getting back together, and Sinead O’Connor has just released the song “Nothing Compares 2 U.” I wonder if she knew I’d be writing about her in my blog in 2019? Probably not. Anyways, this one is pretty straightforward. Furman is honestly such an interesting place and unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The vibe is difficult to describe until you walk on campus, but it really is something special. Nothing compares “2” it. Also here’s a link to it:

If Furman were a clothing item it would definitely be a diaper because it’s always there to support you, even when you get a little messy.

The first thing that came to mind was the letter “G”. Why? The Furman community is amazing. It’s nice and close just like the letter G. I’ve always felt comfortable and safe at Furman, and that is mostly because of how tight-knit the community is, just like the letter G. However, it’s also welcoming and new students are always brought in with open arms (hence the little open space in the G).

This past summer, after 14 years of waiting, we were finally blessed with a sequel to the smash hit “The Incredibles.” Elastigirl (aka Helen Parr aka the mom) was undoubtedly the star of the movie. Furman students are a lot more similar to Elastigirl than you might think. Elastigirl’s superpower is that she’s flexible, and I would argue that Furman students might be superheroes based on that criteria as well. With a student body of only 2,800, getting involved is easy and many Furman students find outlets to make a difference on campus. But being involved requires flexibility, and that’s one skill I think every Furman students masters before graduation. She’s also adaptable, and anyone who’s a college student knows that adaptability comes with the nature of being a college student and also a human. Most importantly, Elastigirl is caring and uses her power to change the world. Furman students are some of the most passionate people I’ve met, and I know that many of my friends will go on to do great things. We are all Elastigirl.

To understand this one, you need to watch the vine linked above first. Let’s face it: a lot of Furman students are sleep deprived. With school, social life, and involvements, sometimes you have to sacrifice a little sleep for your responsibilities. But sometimes some of your best memories come from the late nights. There were so many nights I stayed up an extra hour or two with my friends just hanging out in the dorms, and those have been some of my favorite nights of my college experience.
Well, I hope this post gave you some sense of the community and types of people at Furman! See you next week!
