As someone nearly halfway through my time here at Furman, I’ve created a few habits that have remained consistent in the past 2-ish years. Some of them are great like getting breakfast in the DH once a week with friends from freshman year. Others are not-so-great, like hitting the snooze button a ridiculous amount of time every morning and missing the aforementioned breakfast dates. Beyond settling into a sort of routine here, I also have some spots on campus that are, without fail, my go-to’s depending on the situation. Here they are!

Best Place for a Late-Night Snack – The Lib Cafe
The Lib Café is a little coffee shop attached to the James B. Duke library. It’s opened until midnight most days for those late-night studiers. They have the BEST bagel sandwiches and Chai Tea Lattes. My girl Val always hooks me up with a free extra shot of espresso whenever I’m in there. Last semester, on weeks where I had major exams, I’d be in the library all day, leaving only for my classes; bagel sandwiches, brownies, and iced coffee got me through those long days.
Best Place for a Quick Nap – Plyler Couches
I am one of those weird people who LOVE their dorm room bed, so whenever I have enough free time you can find me in there reading or taking a nap. However, some days when I don’t have enough time between class and lab, I like to curl up on the couches in Plyler Hall, the main hall in Townes Science Center. Plyler is mainly windows on one side, so on sunny days the hall is warm and welcoming and the perfect place to sit for 20 minutes or so in between classes.
Best Place to People Watch (& Study) – DH Back Patio
Behind the Dining Hall (or DH as we like to call it) there is a small eating area that is right off the pathway by the Furman Lake. Most days, especially in the afternoon, there are plenty of families on walks, people riding bikes, or dogs & their owners (my personal favorite). Some days I’ll swipe in to the DH, grab some dessert, and study out there. Being outside combined with the background noise of people and ducks is so peaceful.
Best Place to Hang Out with Friends – Lakeside Lounges
Lakeside is our sophomore housing places, and pretty much every hall has a little room with a TV and couches. Freshman year one of my friends was lucky enough to be placed in Lakeside and had a lounge right across from her room. At least one night a week, we would cram about 10 of us in there and watch movies or the Bachelor in there. We don’t do movie nights as often this year, but it was always something I looked forward to doing with them.

Best Place to Take It All In – The Furman Lake
Some days, I have so much energy and am filled with joy, other days I am a little overwhelmed with all I have going on. In either of those situations, I go for a walk around the lake. It’s a great time to call my family or a friend from home, listen to music, or catch up with a friend on campus. I also like to take my camera or my journal with me and let Furman inspire me. Any time of day or night (those 2am walks hit differently, I swear), being outside surrounded by Furman is the best way to take a breather and reflect on what’s going on around you.
I hope y’all enjoyed some of my favorite Furman places! Check in for a new post next week!
