First Year Writing Seminars

As a new students at Furman, you are required to take a First Year Writing Seminar your first year. This is a class is a writing extensive class in order to prepare new students for writing real college papers, making sure they understand what college professors expect of them and the different formatting they should be using.

Even though you are required to take this seminar, there are a variety of interesting topics for each class, reflecting the different topics you would be writing your papers about. One of the many checklist items to complete over the summer is filling out a survey ranking the different topics you would like to take and from there your advisor will try to place you into one of your top three (3) categories. Some of these categories include, but are not limited to:

  • Government and Politics
  • Health and Wellness
  • Information Technology
  • Literature
  • Mass Media and Popular Culture

  • Reasoning with Data
  • Scientific Inquiry
  • Self-Reflection and Identity
  • Sexuality and Gender
  • Sustainable Practices
