I don’t know about y’all but I get bored… easily! And I’m no art major but I’d like to think of myself as somewhat creative and I’m always looking for new ways to spice up my dining hall experience. The only problem is I’m also very much a creature of habit and am not ashamed to admit that I am a VERY picky eater!
So there I am, still going to the DH, still eating the same salad, and still too scared to branch out. But as I sit there I look around and see all those other students unleashing their inner Food Network Star and coming up with their own dining hall renditions, curiosity got the best of me!
So I decided to take to the Furman Admissions Instagram to find out the best DH hacks without having to go through the trial and errors myself.
One of the most popular dining hall hack suggestions was for those with a sweet tooth. As far as desserts go, Ice cream sandwiches and root beer floats were by far the most popular hack. Students take advantage of the soft serve ice cream and the DH cookies to make those delicious creations.
Another DH hack that seemed to be pretty popular was Quesadillas! Multiple people suggested filling a tortilla with the cheese from the salad bar, and then collecting your favorite toppings from different stations around the dining hall and then grilling it in the panini press to create the perfect quesadilla.
After hearing all the creative options the dining hall has to offer, I decided to FINALLY be a little adventurous! I went for something that brings me back to my Italian roots, an affogato, and BOY it did not disappoint! Here’s how you do it…. when swiping into the DH ask for a to-go coffee cup, then fill it with soft serve vanilla ice cream. Take that cup over to the drinks station and use the coffee machine to put one espresso on top of that ice cream (if you really want to spice things up, crumble one of those amazing DH cookies on top!), grab a spoon and enjoy !!
Now all this talk about food is making me hungry, so if you ever need someone to go to the DH with or to make you an affogato… I’m your girl! – Rosemary Cruse
