It seems to be a common trend on college campuses to have little myths, stories, or legends surrounding the universities landmarks or symbols. Furman is no stranger to subjecting it’s students to these trickeries and many of us (if you’re like me) go on believing these myths for far longer than you probably should. Today I thought I’d share some of my favorite Furman myths and let y’all decide for yourself just how much truth they hold!
If you’ve heard of Furman, you’ve heard or seen our Bell Tower; so it is no surprise that it is the subject the majority of our little fables.
Legend has it that if you kiss someone under the Bell Tower then you are destined to be married!!! So choose wisely and don’t lock yourself in first semester freshman year or you will have to take part in the breaking of the curse!! To break the curse, you and the person you kissed have to go back to the Bell Tower and you have to run around then Bell Tower an then you have to throw them in the lake.. so like I said choose wisely or make sure that person can swim!

The second mystery surrounding the Bell Tower is the super secret Bell Tower society! This is said to be a select group of seniors who meet in the Old College Building (the little building right by the tower) and pick what songs get played on the Bell Tower! This group must never reveal themselves and it is invite only!!

The final story about the Bell Tower is one I am guilty of fully believing in until I was just recently informed of the fact that is very much a myth. I was told that whenever the Bell Tower played that it was a music class in session. I was fully convinced that there was a class offered at Furman for the music students that allowed them to play the bells every day and every hour on the hour…. seems silly now thinking about it now but the thought of class scheduling was not one that crossed my mind when I was told about this “class.”
So I’m sorry to all the people/perspective students who I’ve misinformed about the Bell Tower class. But, Hey! Who knows… maybe ( just like all these other “myths”) it is actually true. And if ya ever need someone to tell ya all the “facts”…. I’m your girl!- Rosemary
