Senior year is full of surprises. Moving all your classes to online learning? I am sure that was a big one for many of you. Although this year is already shaping up to look much different than anticipated, there are still big decisions to make in the coming months. A main one being – where will you choose to call home for the next four years?
Your college applications are complete, you have received your admissions decisions, now you might be asking yourself… what’s next? For some of you it may feel like the hardest part is over. For others, it may have just begun. Narrowing down your college decision takes time and we are here to help every step of the way. If you are unsure where to start, keep reading for some of my tips for seniors.
Think about what is important to you.
I know what you are thinking, this may sound a bit obvious… but really take some time to think. What are your “must have’s”? What experiences do you crave? Whether it’s being part of a community, internship opportunities, or particular class offerings, take some time to fully envision yourself on a college campus.
Take advantage of opportunities to get to know the school better.
Maybe you toured the school during your junior year, or met with an admissions counselor last fall. Although these programs are a great source of information – there is always room to better educate yourself on a university. Many schools have cancelled campus visit programming due to current health and safety circumstances, but there are many alternate opportunities available! Furman is currently offering Virtual Information Sessions, Student Panels, and Skype calls with prospective students. These opportunities can be a great way to build upon your prior knowledge of the school!
Don’t be a stranger to your Admissions Counselor.
Our job is not only to help you through the application process, but to be a resource after your admissions decision has been received. If you were admitted to Furman, reach out so we can celebrate together! Let us know what questions you have – we are in this together.
Maybe you received notice that you have been placed on the wait-list. This means we want to get to know you better and in turn share more about Furman with you! Keep in touch, ask questions, and let us know how we can continue to advocate for you.
Form connections with the campus community.
It is important to choose a school that feels like the right academic fit, but social fit is also an important piece of the puzzle. Are you passionate about biology? Are your curious about the presence of Greek Life? Ask your admissions counselor to connect you with a faculty member or current student. These conversations can be a great way to understand student experience on a deeper level, while starting to form connections with the campus community!
Get connected on social media.
I am confident that most (if not all) of you reading this are familiar with Instagram. If you are like me, maybe working remotely has even increased your screen time on the app. The next time you are scrolling, consider looking into some university accounts. Not only do schools have main university accounts, but many have pages for clubs, organizations, and campus departments! Below are a few of my personal Furman favorites:
Furman University – @furmanuniversity
Office of Admissions – @fuadmission
Paladin Athletics – @furmanpaladins
Student Diversity Council – @furmansdc
Heller Service Corps – @fuheller
Pauper Players – @fupauperplayers
Orientation – @fuorientation
Take the leap.
You have done your research, made your pro’s and con’s lists, now it is time to take the leap and make things official. Once you sign your letter of intent and place your deposit – the fun begins! Orientation is around the corner and we cannot wait to welcome you home.
